We will start our tour from Rhodes Old town which is the biggest inhabited medieval town in Europe. More than 4.000 people are still living inside. The Medieval Town of Rhodes is listed in the World Heritage Sites List of UNESCO with cultural sites with exceptional value and it is protected for the benefit of all Humanity. The Old town is closing for cars at 9.00AM so we need to start our tour at 8.30AM. You will have a 20min drive inside so that we can show you the main monuments – Grand Master Palace, Knights’ street and the Clock Tower.
In case you are not able to start at 8.30AM or there is any change in the regulations of the city we will show you the best from outside.
After the Old town, we will continue towards the new part of the town and visit the Mandraki port where once stood the famous Colossus of Rhodes – one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. The Colossus was a big statue of the god of the sun – Helios and it stood for 56 years when an earthquake destroyed it. We will stop for pictures of the area and you can also enter and see the Church of the Annunciation which is the biggest Orthodox church in the town with very beautiful handmade paintings on the walls and impressive chandeliers.
From there we will pass and see the Northern point of the island where the Aegean sea and Mediterranean sea are meeting each other and then we will stop for a panoramic view of the city from the Monthe Smith Hill.
Next we will visit the Acropolis of Rhodes. You can walk and explore the area and see the Temple of Appolo, the Ancient stadium and Amphitheatre.
From there we will continue our tour on the West Coast of the island and we will first visit Filerimos Hill which is approximately 16km away from the city of Rhodes. Once it was the citadel of the ancient town of Ialysos. You will be able to see the 2 monasteries which are situated there and the 18m high cross.
For the period from mid of June till the mid of September, we can substitute the stop at Filerimos Hill with a visit to the Butterfly Valley. The valley is a natural reserve, unique of its kind. You can enjoy a peaceful walk and admire the nature and the butterflies. Your driver will wait for you on the other side of the park.
From here we will drive towards Ancient Kamiros where you will be able to see the ruins of Kamiros – one of the first three cities on the island. With the foundation of the City of Rhodes in 408 BC, Kamiros started to decline. Nowadays it is a very important archaeological site, as the ancient village is preserved in excellent condition. Important findings from the area are part of the collections of the British Museum and the Louvre.
Wonderful day on Rhodes with Kostas
After reading the cruise ship’s excursion options, we decided to plan our own day. I was able to easily book a driver through Rhodes Taxi Tours. Kostas Stratis met us at the dock in his clean and comfortable car. His English was excellent (he speaks about four languages) and he proudly showed us the sights we requested, explaining the both the history and the current events. He was considerate of some of my walking limitations and made sure that the drop-off and pick-up points for some of the walks we wanted to take (Butterfly Valley) were the best for me. The visit to Anastasia Triantafyllou winery was extra-special, as we were the only patrons there and had a fine opportunity to talk vineyards and winemaking with Anastasia herself. Kostas had arranged a lunch for us in a beautiful restaurant overlooking the ocean, Panorama Tsampikas Archangelos, where the manager or owner of Rhodes Taxi Tours met us and thanked us for using their services. Kostas was outstanding and the tour company itself very responsive to our particular requests.
