Lindos Village & Acropolis

Lindos Village

Lindos village is situated 55km south from Rhodes town on the East Coast of the island. A unique monument of preservation, listed in the Unesco world heritage list and under the protection of the Archaeological Society. Wonderful combination of the blue sky and sea and the white color of the traditional houses. Before reaching the village you can marvel at an amazing panoramic view of the village which captures visitors in a stunning way.

Lindos Acropolis

The Acropolis of Lindos was built on a steep rock 116 meters height overlooking the blue Sea and the Lindos village below.  On the top of the hill, there is the 14th-century fortress built by the Knights of St. John and the Acropolis of Lindian Athena. Then the paved streets and the village itself at the slope of the hill. Walk through the small, narrow streets or visit the Acropolis eighter on foot or using the “Lindian Taxi” donkeys!

Lindos was found by the Dorians who arrived on the island about 10th BC. By the 8th century BC, it was a major trading and shipping center, which started to decline after the foundation of the city of Rhodes in 408 BC. In its prime, along with the other two major cities on the island, Kamiros and Ialysos, they contributed to the fleet of 1000 ships that went to fight in the Battle of Troy.

In classical times the Acropolis of Lindos was dominated by the massive temple of Athena Lindia, dating from about 300BC. During the Byzantine period, the Acropolis of Lindos was transformed to a fortress. In the 14th century, the Knights of the order of St. John significantly strengthened the fortification of the Acropolis, turning Lindos into a powerful fortified castle.

At the bottom of the steps leading to the Acropolis is a 280BC relief of a Rodian Trireme(ancient Greek warship) carved into the rock, an indication of the naval power of ancient Rhodes. The remains also include the Church of St. John, dating from the 13th century and the Propylaia. The ancient theatre, carved into the rock is situated on the slope below the Acropolis.
