Kritinia Castle(Kastello) is a Venetian castle built in 1472 by the engineer Giorgio Orsini to protect the inhabitants of the village from the attacks of the Ottoman fleets. The castle is built on a steep rock 131m high. It offers a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea,the West Coast of Rhodes, the island of Chalki and some other deserted islands. The Kritinia castle was built during the period of the Knights of the Order of St. John and this place was chosen because of its stratigic location and 360-degree observation view of the sea.
Originally, the castle was divided in three levels, each of them belonging to a different Grand Master. The castle of Kritinia is a mixture of Byzantine and Medieval styles. Today only the walls of the castle have survived. Within the walls there are also remnants of a chapel devoted to Saint John.
Surrounded by the beautiful landscape you will really enjoy your visit surronded with the ruins of this magestic Medieval castle.
